Is there a possibility of using URL Rewrite to shorten / hide the long URL created. Any help on this greatly appreciated

    You may try to look into Apache Tomcat's proxy pass module. See example at https://wiki.magnolia-cms.com/display/WIKI/Rewrite+URLs+with+Apache
